Those of us that have experienced the pain brought on by Plantar Fasciitis know how much it can limit ordinary day-to-day capabilities. My symptoms were often so bad I could barely walk when i got out of bed in the morning.
What can cause Plantar Fasciitis?
Very tight calf muscles are the predominant cause of plantar fasciitis. Any repeated over stretching of the plantar fascia because of tight calf muscles leads to inflammation and thickening of the tendon. When the fascia thickens it loses flexibility and also strength.Other reasons include higher arch or lower arch feet and other biomechanical irregularities that should be assessed by a podiatric physician or physiotherapist.
What treatments will alleviate your pain and prevent recurrence?
Cold therapy wraps are great for decreasing any pain together with inflammation. The whole wrap is places in the freezer until required. To apply wrap around your foot where it will stay in place for the required period of time. This is effective as quick, clean and simple cold therapy.
As I mentioned, the pain is worst first thing each morning since the plantar fascia contract in the course of your sleep. An effective product to apply stretch therapy while you sleep is a night splint, that prevents the fascia from tightening up. The splint allows you to gradually increase the stretch at the ankle as the overall flexibility increases.
Abnormal foot function can be the contributory factor in in the start of plantar fasciitis. If you have a flat foot or your foot rolls inward when walking additional stress is put on the fascia.Likewise if you have a high rigid arch or the foot rolls outward when walking, then your foot lacks correct shock absorption. When I got a great pair of custom made insoles my Plantar Fasciitis pain went away in a couple weeks.
If you have typical foot mechanics, professional quality heel pads may be the way to go. They provide extra padding underneath the heel and also have an important soft area which reduces the stress on the most painful area.
