Tea Tree Oil Background

Tea tree oil (also known as melaleuca oil) is a clear - and sometimes pale golden color - essential oil with a fresh scent.

Tea tree oil is made from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, a plan native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. And what exactly is a "tea tree"?  It is a tree or shrub with needle like leaves similar to cypress, with heads of pale flowers.

Tea Tree Oil Benefits

There are many tea tree oil benefits.  From a medical perspective it has antiseptic and antifungal properties.  It has been used in Australia for many, many years - well before there was scientific evidence proving its effectiveness. Recent studies suggest that tea tree oil valuable in skin care and treatment of various ailments.

Infection: Tea Tree Oil is a popular natural agent for helping to address three types of infectious organisms: fungus, bacteria, and virus. Interesting, tea tree oil fights a number of infections that are resistant to some antibiotics.

Skin: Tea Tree Oil is a wonderful and natural remedy for hundreds of bacterial and fungal skin ailments such as acne, sun burn, abscess, oily skin, warts, blisters, athlete's foot, insect bites, rashes, dandruff and minor wounds and irritations.

Respiratory: Studies have shown that Tea Tree Oil treats minor and common breathing and respiratory issues including sore throats, runny nose, coughs and runny nose.  But special tea tree oil benefits include treatment of more serious conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. The anti-viral properties of tea tree oil fight many common infectious diseases like shingles, flu, and cold sores.  It also strengthens your own immune system � especially when it is weak due to illness, stress, or the use of drugs like antibiotics.  Fill a large bowl or pot or bowl with water.  Boil it, remove it from the stove, and add 1 to 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil.  Cover your head with a towel and lean over the bowl so that the towel covers your head and hangs down to the sides of the pot.  Inhale the vapors for about 5-10 minutes.

Antifungal: Tea tree oil is a known antifungal agent, effective in multiple dermatophytes found on the skin. Shampoo with 5% tea tree oil has been shown to be an effective treatment for dandruff.  Why?  Because of the oil's ability to treat Malassezia furfur, a common cause of the condition.

Oral: Use tea tree oil as a mouth wash.  It is great for healing oral infections.  Some special tea tree oil benefits are that it is a natural cure for bad breath, gingivitis, inflamed gums, and plaque.  Use it to kill mouth bacteria before dental surgery and to reduce mouth irritation caused by dental procedures.   Put 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil to a cup of warm water and use it as a mouthwash two to three times daily.   Be sure to spit out and do not swallow the tea tree oil mouthwash (see cautions below). 

Tee Tree Oil Cautions

Use care to make sure you receive the tea tree oil benefits.  Be sure to use tea tree oil diluted - reactions are common with pure tea tree oil.

According to the American Cancer Society: "Tea tree oil is toxic when swallowed. It has been reported to cause drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, unsteadiness, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, blood cell abnormalities, and severe rashes. It should be kept away from pets and children."

In rare cases, people may have a reaction to skin contact with tea tree oil - typically less than 1% of people.  However, the number is higher for undiluted tea tree oil. 

Pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid the use of Tea Tree Oil.

Interesting notes

Note that "tea tree oil" is not the same as "tea oil" which is a sweet seasoning and cooking oil from pressed seeds of the tea plant (drinking tea).
